You'd be hard pressed to find a Jewish young adult in Chicago who doesn't know "Marissa from OneTable," or at least get her emails. For someone who grew up in Hawaii and first arrived in Chicago a few years ago, that's quite the feat.
Known as the Chicago field manager for OneTable to some and the "Shabbat Queen" to others, Marissa brings together Chicago Jewish organizations, Shabbat dinner hosts and young adults in search of connection. She views Shabbat as not just a spiritual practice, but a wellness practice.
Yet the constant networking doesn't keep Marissa from other Jewish involvement. She is also a board member of Jewish Women International's Young Women's Leadership Network and a Chicago community representative for JDC's Entwine.
Marissa also has a regular physical practice: she's an instructor at The Bar Method, where she finds inspiration from her students pushing their physical and mental limits.
Chicago Field Manager, OneTable
ON THE SIDE:
Teaching and taking classes at The Bar Method, trying new recipes for Shabbat dinner, re-watching The West Wing, lounging at Two Hearted Queen in Lakeview and following all things Seattle Seahawks or University of Washington Husky football related.
Taken (quick shout-out to his dog, @therealwookieeanet)
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN 10 WORDS OR LESS:
Probably listening to Jay-Z while chasing dogs on the street.
A JEW WHO INSPIRES YOU:
There’s no question in my mind that I am a better Jew, person, and friend because of Kasey Passen (z”l). I had the honor of working with Kasey for almost two years at OneTable. Kasey, an accomplished chef, added flavor to more than just the food she shared, but to the world around her. Kasey stayed active in the Jewish community and created friendships through meals, all with a smile on her face. Our world lost Kasey too soon and I am so blessed to have shared even a small amount of time with her. Kasey, you inspire me to tackle life with a sense of humor, a hunger for new flavors, and some serious spunk. Thank you for continuing to teach me how to be my best self every day. (Kasey Passen was a 2018 36 Under 36 honoree.)
